Alex Millar (they/them) is a genderqueer neurodivergent award-winning songwriter, composer, performer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and audio engineer. They combine a BFA in Musical Arts and an MFA in Performance & Composition from California Institute of the Arts with 28+ years of professional experience in the music industry and 15+ years of teaching experience.
Alex has been signed to multiple record labels, including Sony Music, and writes, produces, engineers, mixes and masters a wide variety of styles, including Rock, Alternative, Indie, Pop, EDM, Country, Film & Trailer Scoring, Sound Design and more.
They have taught master level classes in Popular Music, Contemporary Songwriting, Composition, Recording Arts, Music Business, and Music Theory. They have also written and arranged music & sound design for stage and dance theater performance for professional touring ensembles.
Alex has performed with numerous musical projects including as the singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer for VATTICA, an award-winning independent alternative rock musical project from Los Angeles with over 20m streams/views/likes. They are also the Music Director for the award-winning collaborative Good Trouble Makers, a Black-led queer artist community nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles and working internationally.
In their academic creative researcher, Alex investigates how the systems of white supremacy shape the popular music and entertainment industry, both historically and presently. They are especially interested in how toxic individuality, a byproduct of capitalism and a core tenant of white supremacy, drives the narrative of how we speak, write, and think about the concept of “success” in popular media, specifically as it pertains to the myth of the “self made” artist. Alex has a deep commitment to democratizing access to knowledge and research, as well as re-contextualizing creative research outside of Academia. Therefore, their research is publicly available in the form of TikTok videos; to date they have over 200k followers who engage with their research and likely would never have encountered it were it not available on a popular social media app.
Alex participated in Good Trouble Makers' term as the official Artist in Residence for the city of Los Angeles and created the original sound score for GTM’s evening-length dance theater piece inVISIBLE, soon to tour to the Toronto Bi Arts Festival.
Alex serves as Music Festival Producer of GTM’s Unicorn pARTy, an international celebration of ambi+\queer art and artists
In 2020/21 Alex created an original sound score for TOUCH | SCREEN, an interactive virtual performance developed through a virtual artist in residency from Pieter Performance Space, funded in part by the Department Of Cultural Affairs, which premiered at The Musco Center in Orange County.
In 2022 Alex was a featured panelist at the West Hollywood Pride premier @ Skybar Mondrian for Dear Mom, a dance movement film by Good Trouble Makers funded by The City of West Hollywood.
In 2023/24 Alex was selected by Community Partners as a recipient of the California Arts Council's CA Creative Corps Fellowship.
